A Taste of Spring with Eden Valley Riesling - Peter Lehmann Wines

A Taste of Spring with Eden Valley Riesling

Each October the Barossa Grape & Wine Association hosts ‘A Taste of Spring with Eden Valley Riesling’. This is a great way for seasoned Riesling lovers, or those new to the varietal to taste this wonderful wine.

The Eden Valley, located in South Australia’s Barossa region and is renowned for its picturesque landscapes and exceptional wines, particularly Riesling. This cool-climate region is characterized by its high elevation, which helps to produce wines with vibrant acidity and intense fruit flavors.

Thanks to the cooler temperatures and the well-draining soils the Eden Valley is an ideal region for Riesling - and it produces some of the world's best examples of this wonderful wine. Rieslings are often noted for their aromatic qualities, featuring citrus notes like lime and lemon, along with floral and mineral characteristics. As they age, these wines can develop richer honeyed tones and a more complex palate. In fact many wines develop beautifully and can age for over a decade (or more).

Here at Peter Lehmann, whilst we love all our varietals - but we do have a soft spot for Riesling. We currently have a lovely selection of Riesling which show the diversity of the Eden Valley region.

2017 Masters Wigan Riesling

Awarded 'Best Riesling in the World' (IWSC) six times. This wine presents some toast characters amongst beautiful lime citrus and floral notes. Classic intense lime cordial flavours carry through resonant of an Eden Valley Riesling and are complemented by lemon rind and crisp pure acidity. Drinking beautifully now and will only continue to get better with age.

PLUS, did you know Ray Jordan and Shanteh Wale have awarded the 2017 vintage 95 points and Tom Kline has awarded us 96 points!

2024 Hill & Valley Riesling

Sourced from the super premium Riesling block of our long-term growers Ben
Wroxton and William ‘Bunga’ Hurn, located at the northern and central sections of
the Eden Valley respectively. These vineyards possess all the hallmarks of classic Eden Valley Riesling sites – high altitude, shaly, schisty soil and sparse yet adequate canopy ensuring the fruit remains in optimum condition throughout ripening.

Gentle, steady ripening allowed for picking at optimum fruit ripeness, producing
a fresh, lively Riesling with a delicate green tinge and hints of freshly picked limes,
lemon meringue and lifted floral aromas.

The palate shows great fruit purity with a juicy natural acid line. Lots of citrus flavours intertwined and a waxy minerality reminiscent of how the fruit tasted on the vine.

Slight fruit sweetness balances the acidity and allows for good length on the finish.
2024 is a vintage that will provide both early drinkability and equal ageability of Eden Valley Riesling. This wine should build developed characters slowly thanks to the perfect ripening conditions of the vintage.

2022 Portrait Eden Valley Riesling and 2023 Portrait Eden Valley Riesling

The Portrait wines embody the original promise Peter Lehmann made to the
growers to make wines that show the true character of the Barossa. Collectively, these wines present a portrait of the region through a selection of the traditional varietals that made it famous.

The palate shows great fruit purity with a freshening natural acid line. It exhibits
lots of citrus flavours, lemon pith and a floral intensity that carries through from the
bouquet. A slight amount of residual sweetness balances the acidity and allows for
good length on the finish.

So, if you are down our way in the Barossa in October - stop in and taste our Rieslings - you may reignite your passion for the Riesling drop or discover something new!
